SOPEC Ranks 7th Nationally for CCA Green Power Sales in 2023

The Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC) proudly announces its ranking as 7th in the United States for Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) green power sales in 2023, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This achievement reflects SOPEC’s ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions and empowering Ohio communities.

NREL, a national leader in renewable energy research, compiles annual "Top 10" lists recognizing outstanding performance in green power programs. SOPEC’s ranking acknowledges its leadership in providing renewable energy options through community choice aggregation, a model that allows local governments to procure electricity on behalf of eligible residents and small businesses.

SOPEC’s commitment to sustainability began with the launch of its Electric Aggregation Program in February 2015. Initially, the Program supported 25% of electric usage with Green-e® certified renewable energy while achieving 28% savings compared to standard utility rates. In 2018, SOPEC further advanced its mission by introducing a 100% Green-e® program for its founding member communities. By June 2020, all participating SOPEC communities had adopted the 100% renewable energy rate as their default supply. Today, SOPEC serves 38 members statewide, offering competitive electricity rates with 100% renewable energy supply to its eligible members.

SOPEC’s innovative approach and collaboration with communities has resulted in significant environmental impact and energy savings. “SOPEC is proud to be a leader in assisting our communities in working together towards a sustainable future which makes all of our communities more resilient,” said Luke Sulfridge, Executive Director, SOPEC. “We are honored to be recognized among the nation’s leaders in renewable energy.”

SOPEC remains dedicated to expanding its reach and enhancing the benefits of renewable energy for Ohio residents. For more information about SOPEC and its programs, visit www.sopec-oh.gov.
