New City of Dayton Electric Aggregation Program will be Approximately 30% Cheaper than AES Ohio Standard Service Offer Rate, and will Feature 100% Renewable Energy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 11, 2022, Dayton, OH

City of Dayton residents and small businesses participating in the Dayton Electric Aggregation Program will not be impacted by AES Ohio’s (AES) recent proposed standard service offer rate increase. AES has applied to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to raise generation charges from 4.8 cents per kWh to 10.91 cents per kWh for the 12-month period starting June 1, 2022.

Last May, the City of Dayton joined the Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC), a nonprofit council of governments that works with Dayton and other member communities across Ohio to secure a fixed-term, competitive electricity rate for residents and small businesses, and access to renewable energy. Starting with the June 2022 meter-read date, eligible City of Dayton residents and small businesses will receive 100% renewable energy at the new price of 7.457 cents per kWh for their electricity supply charges for a period of 12 months.

As a result, not only will Dayton’s Electric Aggregation Program now feature 100% renewable energy, it will also be approximately 30% cheaper than the AES standard service offer (SSO) (Dayton Electric Aggregation Program: 7.457 cents per kWh vs. AES SSO: 10.91 cents per kWh). The average Dayton customer is estimated to save approximately $300 over the next 12-month period starting June 1, 2022 compared to the AES standard service offer. We currently estimate approximately $10 million in total combined savings for all participating Dayton Electric Aggregation Program customers.

“The dramatic proposed rate increases announced by AES would place considerable financial stress on residents. However, I’m happy and relieved that we at the City of Dayton have given our residents a better and cheaper option,” Dayton City Commissioner Matt Joseph said. “A few months ago, we decided to reactivate our electric aggregation program with SOPEC, a nonprofit council of governments focused on renewable energy. The rate we are getting through SOPEC is much better than the proposed AES standard service offer rate. Not only will Dayton residents save money, but the City is getting much closer to reaching its clean energy goals by choosing to make the Dayton Electric Aggregation Program feature 100% renewable energy. Daytonians will save money by participating and will be doing the right thing for our climate at the same time. I hope other communities will join us in the electric aggregation program with SOPEC.”

Eligible residents and small businesses are currently receiving an “opt-out” notice from SOPEC and SOPEC’s electricity supplier AEP Energy. Those receiving the letter do not need to take any action to take advantage of the electric aggregation rate (“How to save with City of Dayton energy program? Do nothing”, Dayton Daily News, April 14, 2022).
